The nationally recognized Mississippi Songwriters Festivals is an annual event hosted by the Mississippi Songwriters Alliance in Ocean Springs, Ms. Downtown streets of the Gulf Coast are filled every September with prominent local, regional, and professional Mississippi songwriters of all genres and fans seeking to observe the state’s great talent. The festival stretches from local venues, to late night, rocking-chair “guitar pulls” at the famous Gulf Hills resort. Whether a veteran songwriting enthusiast or newcomer, all are certain to be immersed in Mississippi’s rich songwriting culture at the annual festival.
In 2015, the Mississippi Songwriters Alliance launched the Songs and Stories radio show. Songs and Stories is a monthly concert/radio show that features local, regional, and professional songwriters performing to a live-recorded audience at the Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Center in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The Songs and Stories show amplifies Mississippi songwriting culture at the core and serves as a pilot to annual Mississippi Songwriters Festival. The renowned show fills over 100 seats each month with songwriting fans and has attracted notable hit songwriters such as Travis Meadows, Brett Jones, and Tommy Barnes.
The Mississippi Songwriters Alliance Educational Outreach Program brings songwriters to the classroom with an objective to educate and expose students to the historic music culture of the state in effort to grow awareness among the state's future artists. Ambassadors work with the students via collaborative activities to ensure every child with a dream of pursuing music is provided the inspiration and resources to aid achieving a future in music. The Alliance is responsible for donating a variety of instruments to numerous Gulf Coast classrooms annually.
In effort to cultivate Mississippi’s legacy and growing songwriting culture, the Mississippi Songwriters Alliance Ambassador program searches for “up and coming” songwriters to serve as ambassadors for the organization. Ambassadors are selected annually by the Mississippi Songwriters Alliance board with the goal to place distinct emphasis on the state’s best new talent and provide opportunities to showcase skills at alliance-sanctioned events.
The Mississippi Songwriters Alliance is a proud partner of Operation Song. Operation Song is a 501(c)(3) non-profit based in Nashville, Tennessee founded in 2012. The group pairs professional songwriters with veterans, active military, and their families to help them tell their stories through songs. Operation Song holds weekly workshops in Middle Tennessee and sponsor events and group retreats throughout the U.S. In 2017, Mississippi Songwriters Alliance partnered with the VA in Biloxi to implement Operation Song. This will be an ongoing partnership with the VA, Mississippi Songwriters Alliance, and Operation Song.
Through our Ambassador Program, we give back to our communities where we live and practice our art. The MS Songwriters Alliance serves to provide music and assistance to community, non-profit organizations, and charitable events throughout the state.
From its earliest beginnings, the MS Songwriters Festival has been overwhelmingly welcomed and warmly received by the City of Ocean Springs! From the sponsors, to the venues, we can't bring this important Festival to our city without you!
Recently, our Board of Directors presented Mayor Dobson an autographed guitar in appreciation for his support to the MSA. It was signed by all the performers/songwriters from the 2017 Festival. Who knows? Maybe this year, we'll see him on stage!
